Former AFCON champion Salomon Kalou has highlighted Ademola Lookman and Brahim Diaz as the standout attacking players of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing that their contributions extend far beyond scoring goals.
Kalou, who played a major role in Ivory Coast’s previous continental successes, explained that both players have risen above the rest in a tournament defined by tactical rigidity, limited space, and constant pressure. He said their ability to shift momentum and influence matches has been unmatched.
“For me, two attacking players have really stood out—Brahim Díaz and Ademola Lookman. People often focus only on the goalscorers, but these two have been doing much more than putting the ball in the net,” Kalou said.
“They’ve been dictating the tempo, challenging defenders one-on-one, creating overloads, breaking defensive lines, and delivering the big moments that decide games.”
The former Chelsea forward also singled out Lookman for his importance to Nigeria’s campaign, noting that he consistently stepped up in high-pressure moments.
“Lookman carried Nigeria at certain stages with his direct style and confidence. Díaz has been just as outstanding—technically gifted, always positive, always looking to make something happen,” he added.
“In a tournament where space is limited and the intensity is massive, players like them become game-changers.”
Brahim Diaz currently sits at the top of the Golden Boot race with five goals as Morocco head into Sunday’s final against Senegal.
Lookman has also been crucial to Nigeria’s journey, which came to an end in the semi-final against Morocco. The hosts delivered a highly disciplined defensive display, restricting the Super Eagles to only 20 attempts in 120 minutes before sealing a 4–2 victory in the penalty shootout.
