Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has begun laying strategic groundwork for the 2027 general election by confirming that its next presidential candidate will emerge from the southern region of the country.
The announcement followed high-level consultations in Abuja led by the party’s National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, who briefed journalists after an extended private engagement with former Vice President Namadi Sambo. The meeting, according to party officials, formed part of broader efforts to reposition the PDP ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Rather than endorsing a specific aspirant, Turaki emphasised that the party’s decision focuses solely on regional zoning. He explained that while the presidential ticket has been reserved for the South, no individual has received preferential treatment or informal endorsement.
According to him, eligibility will not be restricted beyond regional qualification, as every member connected to southern Nigeria—whether by residence or origin—remains free to seek the party’s nomination. The leadership, he said, intends to encourage competition rather than impose consensus candidates.
Turaki reiterated that internal democracy would guide the process, stressing that transparency and fairness would shape the selection of the party’s flagbearer. He noted that the PDP aims to create equal opportunities for aspirants, ensuring that the nomination exercise reflects credibility and openness.
Addressing speculation surrounding prominent political figures, he clarified that discussions within the party have not centred on drafting any former leader into the race. Instead, the emphasis remains on building an inclusive platform capable of attracting diverse contenders.
He added that the eventual emergence of a candidate would depend not only on party procedures but also on public acceptance. In his view, the wider Nigerian electorate will ultimately determine who carries the PDP banner into the presidential election.
The meeting with Namadi Sambo also highlighted internal consolidation efforts. Turaki disclosed that the former vice president reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and pledged continued support as consultations intensify nationwide.
