The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election will be open to all qualified members of the party from the southern region of Nigeria.
The party’s National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja following a private meeting with former Vice President Namadi Sambo.
Addressing journalists after the closed-door engagement, which lasted about three hours, Turaki reaffirmed that the PDP had agreed to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, while stressing that no individual has been anointed or favoured as the party’s candidate.
“As I have consistently stated, the PDP has resolved to zone the presidential ticket to the southern part of the country. At this point, we do not know who will eventually emerge as our candidate, although we are clear about those who will not,” Turaki said.
When asked whether a former president was being considered for the race, the PDP chairman clarified that the contest remains open to all eligible party members from the southern region.
“The ticket is open to every PDP member who is either resident in southern Nigeria or of southern Nigerian origin,” he stated.
Turaki further assured party members and the general public that the process of selecting the party’s flagbearer would be inclusive, transparent, and fair.
“The process will be open, transparent, fair, equitable, and designed to provide a level playing field for all aspirants,” he added.
He also emphasised that the final decision on who emerges as the PDP’s presidential candidate would ultimately lie with Nigerians.
“If anyone chooses to contest, we want to assure Nigerians that they will be the ones to decide who becomes the candidate,” Turaki said.
Additionally, the PDP chairman revealed that former Vice President Namadi Sambo pledged his continued loyalty and support for the party ahead of the 2027 polls. He described the meeting as part of ongoing consultations aimed at strengthening and repositioning the PDP for future electoral success.
