Qatar Stars League side Al Ahli SC have officially confirmed the signing of former Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, in a move aimed at bolstering their defence.
The club made the announcement through its official channels, putting an end to widespread speculation about the future of the experienced centre-back.
Troost-Ekong joins Al Ahli from Saudi Arabian outfit Al Kholood, where he was a cornerstone of the team’s defensive line. The 32-year-old has signed a contract that will keep him at the Qatari club until June 2028, highlighting the club’s long-term plans around his leadership and experience.
On arrival, Troost-Ekong was assigned his preferred number five jersey, a number he has worn for the majority of his professional career.
His acquisition is seen as a significant boost for Al Ahli as the team aims to maintain momentum and finish the season strongly in the Qatar Stars League.
During his tenure at Al Kholood, Troost-Ekong made 49 appearances, scored two goals, and provided stability and organisation at the back. His performances in Saudi Arabia reinforced his reputation as a commanding and dependable defender, with extensive experience in European, Middle Eastern, and international football.
The move comes shortly after Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close a distinguished career with the Super Eagles.
He captained Nigeria on several occasions and was a key figure in past Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaigns, earning wide respect for his leadership and consistency, though he did not feature in the most recent tournament in Morocco.
With his international career behind him, Troost-Ekong is now set to focus fully on club football as he begins a new chapter in Qatar.
