Awujale: Gov. Abiodun Rejects Claims of Pressuring Kingmakers for ‘Special Candidate’

Spread the love

The Ogun State Government has refuted claims suggesting that Governor Dapo Abiodun attempted to influence traditional kingmakers during the ongoing process to select a new Awujale of Ijebuland.

Officials described circulating reports of intimidation or political pressure as inaccurate, insisting that engagements between the governor and traditional authorities were purely consultative and conducted within established cultural protocols.

Government Clarifies Purpose of Meeting With Kingmakers

In a statement released by the governor’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the administration explained that discussions held with the Council of Afobajes were intended to promote cooperation and stability in traditional affairs rather than influence succession decisions.

According to the statement, the meeting formed part of ongoing dialogue aimed at strengthening harmony among stakeholders involved in the royal selection process.

Authorities emphasised that no directive was issued favouring any aspirant to the revered stool, contrary to rumours suggesting political interference.

Alleged Statements Described as Fabricated

The government also rejected claims that the governor made controversial remarks tied to a preferred candidate. Officials labelled such quotations as completely false, arguing they were created to generate unnecessary tension within Ijebuland.

Akinmade maintained that no kingmaker present at the meeting could verify allegations of threats or coercion because, according to him, no such incident occurred.

He added that consultations were consistent with earlier reconciliation efforts involving other traditional groups previously divided on succession matters.

Emphasis on Dialogue and Legal Resolution

As part of efforts to reduce friction among stakeholders, the statement disclosed that ongoing discussions encouraged peaceful resolution of disputes, including persuading a litigant among the kingmakers to withdraw a court case connected to the selection process.

The government framed these actions as attempts to preserve unity and prevent prolonged conflict capable of disrupting traditional institutions.

Commitment to Traditional Autonomy

Reaffirming the administration’s position, officials stressed that the Awujale institution remains highly respected by the state government. They insisted that the governor’s role is limited to ensuring peaceful coexistence and adherence to lawful procedures rather than determining who emerges as monarch.

The public and media were therefore advised to rely only on verified information from official channels and disregard unconfirmed narratives circulating online.

Commentary & Analysis: Politics, Tradition, and Public Perception

The controversy highlights the delicate balance between political authority and traditional institutions in Nigeria. Governors often play administrative roles in royal succession processes, yet even routine consultations can quickly attract allegations of interference.

In culturally significant selections such as that of the Awujale of Ijebuland, transparency and communication become critical. Public sensitivity surrounding traditional leadership means that misinformation can easily escalate into political or communal tension.

By publicly denying involvement, the Ogun State Government appears focused on preserving the independence of traditional structures while maintaining social harmony. The situation underscores a broader reality in Nigerian governance: maintaining respect for cultural institutions is as important as political administration.

Ultimately, how succession processes are managed — and communicated — can influence public trust not only in government but also in the enduring legitimacy of traditional authority systems.
