Bashir Ahmad Hints at Defections: “Two Opposition Governors Set to Join APC”

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has sparked fresh political debate after claiming that two opposition governors are on the verge of defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a post shared via his verified 𝕏 account on Tuesday, October 7, Ahmad specifically mentioned the Governor of Taraba State and another governor from the North West, saying their formal move to the ruling party would happen “in just a matter of days.”

While no further names were revealed, Ahmad’s comments have fueled speculation of an ongoing wave of defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Spotlight on Taraba State

Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faced mounting pressure from youth groups urging him to align with the APC. Advocates argue that joining the ruling party would help the state access greater federal resources.

Although Kefas has not issued an official statement, his frequent interactions with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at public functions and private meetings have intensified talk of a possible political realignment.

A source told Daily Post that the governor’s calculation may be less about party loyalty and more about ensuring Taraba gains federal attention, particularly for long-delayed projects.

Analysts and Stakeholder Reactions

A political commentator in Jalingo noted:

“The writing may be on the wall. With 2027 approaching, shifts in allegiance are not unusual. If Governor Kefas makes the move, it may be about attracting federal collaboration rather than partisan politics.”

The Concerned Taraba Youth Group has also publicly appealed to the governor to switch allegiance, citing the neglect of major federal projects like the Mambilla Hydro Power Project and the abandoned Zing–Jalingo–Wukari road.

Group spokesperson Shedrack Iremiya Gani stated:

“Considering the continued deterioration and abandonment of federal projects in Taraba, we appeal to Governor Agbu Kefas to align with President Bola Tinubu in order to attract greater federal presence. We want the governor to make history by leaving the PDP and joining the APC.”

APC’s Position

Inside the APC, optimism appears high. A senior party chieftain, speaking anonymously, hinted that multiple prominent PDP defections are in the works, describing the development as “a sign of what is to come” before 2027.
