Religious Violence Will Be Treated as Assault on Nigeria

Nigeria’s Federal Government has issued a strong warning against violence linked to religious differences, stressing that attacks carried out under faith-based narratives will be treated as threats to national unity and state authority.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu delivered the message at the conclusion of the inaugural U.S.–Nigeria Joint Working Group session held in Abuja, a forum dedicated to strengthening cooperation on religious freedom and national security matters. He emphasized that protecting citizens across all religious backgrounds remains a fundamental responsibility of government.

According to Ribadu, Nigeria’s multicultural and multi-faith identity requires equal security guarantees for everyone. He noted that any attempt to disguise criminal acts as religious conflict would attract decisive national response, describing such violence as an assault not merely on communities but on the Nigerian state itself.

Rather than focusing exclusively on military action, the NSA outlined a broader national security framework. He explained that Nigeria’s strategy combines law enforcement, legal accountability, humanitarian protection, and public communication initiatives aimed at building trust between citizens and security institutions.

Security Concerns Raised by Opposition Voices

While the government reaffirmed its approach, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed deep concern over what he described as worsening insecurity nationwide. Reacting to reports surrounding alleged attacks on worshippers in Kaduna State, Obi argued that recurring incidents of violence point to systemic challenges requiring urgent leadership attention.

He questioned the frequency of conflicting reports about kidnappings and attacks, suggesting that uncertainty itself contributes to public fear. In his view, repeated security breaches across several regions indicate a broader governance problem rather than isolated incidents.

Obi also criticised national priorities, arguing that resources devoted to improving international perception should instead be redirected toward strengthening domestic security operations and protecting vulnerable communities.
