Ex-APC Guber Aspirant Alleges Death Threat Over Criticism of Adeleke Government

Concerns over political safety have emerged in Osun State following claims by former All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant Rufai Durotoye that he has received threats linked to his public comments about the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Durotoye, a mathematician based in the United States who previously sought the APC governorship ticket, formally petitioned the Osun State Police Command, requesting security intervention and a quiet investigation into incidents he believes could endanger his life.

According to documents submitted through his legal representative, Kehinde Adesiyan, the politician reported a series of anonymous phone calls alongside two separate visits by unidentified individuals to his Osogbo residence. The petition alleged that the visitors delivered warnings urging him to withdraw remarks he had made regarding state infrastructure projects.

Rather than treating the matter purely as a political disagreement, Durotoye’s legal team framed the complaint as a preventive measure aimed at avoiding escalation. The petition emphasized the need for authorities to question relevant persons and ensure guarantees of safety for the former aspirant.

At the center of the dispute are earlier statements in which Durotoye criticised what he described as uneven distribution of developmental projects across parts of Osun State. He argued that his comments were intended as constructive civic engagement rather than partisan hostility.

Speaking while abroad, Durotoye maintained that citizens and political actors alike retain the constitutional right to comment on governance without intimidation. He said the alleged messages warned of consequences unless he publicly retracted his views.

Allegations Presented to Police Authorities

Instead of listing claims in their original format, the petition highlighted several key concerns raised by the former governorship hopeful:

  • Repeated anonymous calls allegedly demanding silence
  • Visits by unknown individuals delivering warnings at his residence
  • Requests that he reverse criticism directed at state policies
  • Appeal for proactive police action to prevent potential harm

His lawyer stressed that the request for investigation was precautionary, aimed at safeguarding both personal security and democratic expression.

Civic Rights and Political Expression

Durotoye argued that political commentary remains a legitimate aspect of democratic participation. According to him, raising concerns about governance should be viewed as public accountability rather than opposition hostility.

He further noted that open debate strengthens governance by allowing citizens to highlight perceived gaps in policy implementation.

Commentary & Analysis

The development reflects broader tensions that sometimes accompany political discourse at the state level in Nigeria. Allegations of threats following public criticism often raise questions about political tolerance, freedom of expression, and the responsibilities of security agencies.

Political analysts observe that competitive democracies depend heavily on the ability of opposition voices and independent actors to critique government policies without fear. Even unverified allegations can generate concern if they suggest shrinking civic space or heightened political polarization.

At the same time, authorities typically face the challenge of separating genuine security risks from politically charged claims. Transparent investigation and clear communication from law enforcement institutions are often essential in maintaining public confidence.

As the situation unfolds, attention will likely focus on how security agencies respond and whether the matter leads to broader discussions about political engagement, accountability, and democratic protections in Osun State.
