Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta, has played down recent remarks by Pep Guardiola that suggested the Gunners are currently the finest team in global football, stressing that such recognition can only come through consistent achievements and winning major honours.
Guardiola made the statement while addressing journalists ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League encounter with Wolves, where he described Arsenal as the standout side in world football. His comments quickly stirred discussions among fans and pundits, especially considering the intense rivalry that has developed between both clubs in recent title races.
However, Arteta was not keen to accept the praise when questioned about it during his own media briefing ahead of Arsenal’s league showdown against Manchester United on Sunday.
“I’m not sure about that,” Arteta responded when asked to react to Guardiola’s comments.
He explained that while the team is committed to continuous improvement and has made significant progress, there is still room for growth.
“We are a side that is always striving to get better. We are doing many things well, but we are far from being perfect,” he said.
Arteta further noted that true global recognition is built on sustained success and silverware, which his side is still working towards.
“To be considered the best in the world, you have to win major trophies consistently, and we haven’t done that yet,” he added.
Although Arsenal have been widely applauded for their attractive style of play, steady performances, and rapid development under Arteta’s leadership, their lack of multiple major trophies continues to be a key factor in comparisons with Europe’s top clubs.
