Al-Kholood head coach, Des Buckingham, has showered praise on William Troost-Ekong, describing the former Super Eagles captain as an invaluable figure whose impact will be deeply felt following his departure from the Saudi Pro League side.
Troost-Ekong, who joined Al-Kholood from Greek club PAOK in the summer of 2024, completed a transfer to Qatari outfit Al Ahli SC during the January window, ending a short but highly influential spell with the club.
Speaking during a press briefing, Buckingham admitted that while the club would look to recruit a replacement on the pitch, matching Troost-Ekong’s leadership and influence off it would be nearly impossible.
“You can’t replace William, and I wouldn’t want to replace him, either as a footballer or as a person,” Buckingham told journalists. “Of course, we will bring in someone to fill the position, but his overall presence is unique.”
The Al-Kholood boss went on to describe the Nigerian defender as the finest captain he has worked with, emphasising that Troost-Ekong’s leadership extended far beyond matchdays and had a lasting effect on the team’s culture and unity.
“What I mean is that William is the best leader I’ve encountered during my time at this club,” he said.
Buckingham also revealed that Troost-Ekong played a crucial role in helping him settle into life at Al-Kholood, adding that the defender was instrumental in establishing strong standards within the squad.
“He was extremely important in helping me adapt quickly and ensuring that the right culture and environment were maintained within the team,” he added.
As Al-Kholood prepare to move forward without one of their most influential figures, Buckingham stressed that Troost-Ekong’s contribution will continue to resonate long after his exit.
“He guided and supported the players throughout the journey, and I honestly don’t believe we can truly replace him,” he said.
Troost-Ekong departs Al-Kholood after a successful stint, having played a key role in helping the club secure their Saudi Pro League status.
