Former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (rtd), has described the Supreme Court judgment delivered on January 22, which concluded his 28-year prosecution over the murder of Kudirat Abiola, as a defining moment of forgiveness, closure, and renewed dedication to national service.
In his first public reaction following the landmark ruling, which marked the end of a prolonged legal battle spanning the Lagos High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court, Al-Mustapha said the verdict not only cleared his name but also liberated him from feelings of bitterness and resentment.
In a statement released over the weekend, he expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for allowing the judicial process to proceed without interference and stated that he bore no animosity toward any individual or institution.
Recalling his arrest, Al-Mustapha said his ordeal began in 1998 when he and others were detained and charged on what he described as fabricated allegations designed to malign and eliminate him for reasons best known to his accusers.
Reflecting on the experience, he noted that enduring nearly three decades of legal proceedings was anything but pleasant, but expressed gratitude to God that justice ultimately prevailed at the nation’s highest court.
According to him, the Supreme Court’s ruling has enabled him to finally move forward with his life, free from anger and hostility.
“As a committed and patriotic Nigerian, I choose to leave everything that has happened in the past and move ahead without resentment toward any individual or institution,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of forgiveness, explaining that the judgment had fully vindicated him and strengthened his resolve to pardon those who orchestrated his prolonged ordeal.
“As a Muslim, I have forgiven everyone involved. I only ask Almighty Allah to grant me the strength to continue on the path of forgiveness,” he stated.
Al-Mustapha further declared his readiness to re-engage in public life and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth and progress.
“I am prepared to play my part in the development, advancement, and overall well-being of Nigeria,” he affirmed.
He commended the Justices of the Supreme Court for what he described as a meticulous and fair ruling, praising the court as a beacon of hope for ordinary citizens.
“To the distinguished and learned Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, I remain profoundly grateful for your thorough and just judgment. The Supreme Court truly stands as the last hope of the common and defenceless man,” he said.
Al-Mustapha also expressed deep appreciation to Nigerians who stood by him throughout the lengthy trial, particularly his family, whom he said endured intimidation, hardship, and emotional distress.
“My wife and children, who suffered deliberate harassment and persistent threats, deserve special commendation for their unwavering strength and support,” he noted.
He further acknowledged the sacrifices of his legal team and associates, who, he said, faced physical assaults, unlawful break-ins, burglary of their offices, and illegal searches.
In a sombre tribute, Al-Mustapha remembered journalists and others who were injured or lost their lives while covering the prolonged court proceedings, offering condolences to their families.
“They are heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten. I pray that their efforts and dedication will not be in vain,” he said.
Concluding his statement, Al-Mustapha called on Nigerians to reject bitterness and hatred, urging unity and collective effort toward building a better nation.
“Let us shun hatred and work together in harmony to build the Nigeria of our dreams for the sake of future generations,” he added.
