Nigerian forward Samuel Chukwueze made a sensational return from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as he inspired Fulham to a crucial Premier League Matchday 23 victory at Craven Cottage on Friday, January 24.
Chukwueze found the back of the net in a thrilling comeback as Fulham overturned a deficit to defeat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 on home soil. Meanwhile, Manchester City ended their poor run of form with a convincing victory over Wolves at the Etihad Stadium.
In other fixtures, Tottenham Hotspur snatched a dramatic late draw against Burnley, while West Ham United continued their impressive resurgence with a dominant win over Sunderland.
At Craven Cottage, Fulham struggled to find rhythm during much of the first half and were punished in the 28th minute when Yasin Ayari calmly finished to put Brighton ahead after being set up by Olivier Boscagli. The visitors maintained control and went into the interval in front.
Fulham manager Marco Silva changed the complexion of the match shortly before the hour mark by introducing Chukwueze. The Super Eagles winger made an instant impact, restoring parity in the 72nd minute with a well-taken finish following a precise assist from Joachim Andersen. Energised by the equaliser, the home side surged forward in search of a winner.
Their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time, as Harry Wilson showed great composure to slot home in the 92nd minute, completing a dramatic turnaround and sealing all three points for Fulham.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City rediscovered their winning touch with a commanding display against bottom-placed Wolves. Under pressure after a disappointing start to 2026, Pep Guardiola opted to rest Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, but his side still dominated proceedings.
Omar Marmoush broke the deadlock early, converting Matheus Nunes’ cross for his first league goal of the campaign. City doubled their lead just before the break when Bernardo Silva threaded a clever pass to Semenyo, who finished coolly from the edge of the box.
Wolves briefly threatened late in the game through Yerson Mosquera, but City remained largely untroubled as they comfortably saw out the contest.
At Turf Moor, Tottenham Hotspur were forced to settle for a thrilling 2-2 draw against Burnley. Micky van de Ven gave Spurs the lead in the 38th minute, but Axel Tuanzebe struck back for Burnley moments before half-time. The hosts then surged ahead through Lyle Foster in the 76th minute, only for Cristian Romero to rescue a point for Tottenham with a late equaliser.
Earlier in the day, West Ham United delivered one of their strongest performances of the season, cruising to victory over Sunderland and boosting their survival hopes.
The Hammers raced into a commanding three-goal advantage before the interval, with Crysencio Summerville heading in Jarrod Bowen’s cross, Bowen converting confidently from the penalty spot, and Mateus Fernandes unleashing a superb long-range strike.
Sunderland pulled one back after the restart through Brian Brobbey, but West Ham remained solid at the back to secure the win, extending their unbeaten run to three matches across all competitions and intensifying pressure on their relegation rivals.
