Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has cautioned his followers, widely referred to as Obidients, to refrain from directing insults or abuse at members and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Obi stressed that individuals engaging in such conduct are not genuine supporters but rather miscreants hiding behind the Obidient identity to stir trouble.
The former Governor of Anambra State firmly distanced himself from those verbally attacking leaders within the ADC, making it clear that such actions do not align with his principles or values.
Speaking during a meeting at the movement’s secretariat on Tuesday, Obi explained that many of the negative remarks attributed to his supporters actually come from criminals posing as Obidients.
“Most of what you hear are not from true Obidient people but from criminals pretending to be part of us. You will never see anyone among us calling others derogatory names. We do not promote division, and personally, I have never insulted anyone.
“We are part of the ADC and we respect everyone within it. Name-calling and abuse are not things we support. I do not endorse it, and I am not involved in it,” he stated.
Obi further emphasized that the leaders within the ADC are individuals he holds in high regard, describing them as respected elders, brothers, and colleagues, and urged his supporters to maintain that same level of respect.
“The people I met there, including the party chairman, are my senior colleagues. Atiku is my leader and a highly respected elder brother. Amaechi is my brother, and we share a close relationship.
“El-Rufai is also my brother. Others like Liyel Imoke, Oyegun, and Aregbesola are my colleagues. These are people I deeply respect, so how can I speak badly about them?” he asked.
Instead of focusing on personal attacks, Obi encouraged his supporters to channel their energy toward addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges and working collectively to improve the nation’s condition.
“I assure you that those who truly follow me will not speak ill of these leaders. However, some individuals are deliberately trying to tarnish the Peter Obi brand.
“This is not the purpose of politics. Our focus should be on tackling issues such as the growing number of out-of-school children, widespread hunger, unemployment, insecurity, and the alarming rate of kidnappings, where worshippers are abducted from churches and mosques. These are the matters that deserve our full attention,” he concluded.
