Renowned Nollywood actor and filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has dismissed widespread speculation suggesting a rivalry between himself and fellow actor Ibrahim Chatta, insisting that there is no competition between them.
Gossip News Now reports that Afolayan addressed the rumours on Wednesday, January 28, during the watch party for his latest production, Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens, held at Igbojaye in Oyo State, with Ibrahim Chatta present at the event.
The gathering attracted several Nollywood stars, including Kiekie, Broda Shaggi, Papi Luwe, Sola Kosoko, and Gabriel Afolayan, among others.
Speaking at the event, Afolayan explained that both he and Chatta are united by a common goal — preserving and promoting African culture and heritage — rather than competing with each other.
He stressed that their individual efforts are geared toward uplifting their ancestral legacy and cultural roots, not personal rivalry.
In his words, he said:
“There is absolutely no competition between us. We are both committed to elevating the glory of our heritage, our lineage, and our origins. There’s Afri Chatta in Oyo, and if you haven’t visited, you really should. Many films you’ve watched, including Ageshinkole, were shot at Afri Chatta Resorts and Film Studio. We are not in competition at all — in fact, we’re not even doing the same thing. This is actually his first time visiting here, even though I’ve invited him many times, and I also accept my own part in that.”
Afolayan also addressed his decision to avoid focusing on large-scale cinema releases within Nigeria, stating that financial returns remain a key factor in his production choices.
“I don’t want to make a film that earns one or two billion naira in cinemas if I won’t be able to personally earn even ten million from it,” he explained.
