BREAKING: ‘We Are Still Legally Standing and Unmoved’ – PDP Responds to Court Ruling

Fresh tensions have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a ruling by the Federal High Court in Ibadan that questioned the legitimacy of the party’s recent national convention.

The decision has triggered an immediate response from the faction associated with Taminu Turaki, which insists that its leadership structure remains valid despite the court’s pronouncement.

The court ruling specifically addressed the PDP National Convention held in Oyo State on November 15, 2025, an event that produced a leadership team aligned with the Turaki faction.

In the judgment delivered on Friday, the court stated that the convention could not stand as legally binding. As part of the ruling, members of the National Working Committee formed from that gathering were directed not to present themselves as the party’s national officials.

The court also clarified its position regarding the current leadership of the party, identifying a caretaker structure led by Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the only recognized authority for the time being.

According to the judgment, that caretaker committee will remain in charge of the party until a properly conducted national convention takes place.

Despite the implications of the ruling, leaders aligned with Turaki have made it clear that they do not intend to accept the verdict without further legal challenge.

In a reaction issued shortly after the court’s decision, Ini Ememobong, who serves as the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary within the Turaki faction, attempted to reassure party supporters.

He encouraged members not to interpret the ruling as a final defeat for the faction, emphasizing that the matter is still subject to the appellate process.

According to Ememobong, the court declined to grant a specific legal relief sought in the case because doing so would have required the court to effectively review or overturn earlier decisions made by courts of equal jurisdiction.

For this reason, he suggested that the ruling does not necessarily invalidate the broader political structure created during the Ibadan convention.

The spokesperson further disclosed that the party’s legal advisers had already begun preparing an appeal aimed at reversing the decision.

He stressed that the faction remains confident in its legal standing and believes the issue will ultimately be resolved in its favour at higher courts.

In his remarks, Ememobong insisted that the leadership produced at the Ibadan convention remains intact while the judicial process continues.

He urged members of the party to stay focused and avoid unnecessary anxiety as the legal battle unfolds.

The spokesman also reiterated the faction’s commitment to what he described as a political revival within the party.

Referring to this initiative as a broader reform agenda, he noted that the movement aimed at revitalizing the PDP remains active and determined to move forward.

Commentary and Analysis

The latest court ruling highlights the deep internal divisions within the PDP, a party that has struggled in recent years to maintain unity following electoral defeats and leadership disputes.

Legal battles over party conventions and leadership structures have become a recurring feature of Nigerian politics, often reflecting underlying political rivalries.

In this case, the court’s recognition of a caretaker committee suggests an attempt to stabilize the party’s leadership until a new and legally accepted convention can be held.

However, the decision to appeal the ruling means that the conflict is far from over.

If the appellate courts eventually overturn the judgment, the Turaki faction could regain legitimacy. On the other hand, if the ruling is upheld, the party may be forced to reorganize its leadership through another convention.

Either outcome will likely influence the PDP’s ability to present a united front as Nigeria gradually approaches future election cycles.
