‘If She Feels Offended I Am Sorry’ – Kunle Afolayan Clarifies Relationship With Funke Akindele

Renowned filmmaker and creative entrepreneur Kunle Afolayan has dismissed claims of a rift with fellow filmmaker Funke Akindele, assuring the public that he holds no grudges and regards her as a sister.

Afolayan made the clarification during an interview with ARISE News on Sunday, responding to reports that hinted at tension between the two Nollywood heavyweights.

“I have absolutely nothing against her. She’s my sister; we grew up together. So when she called and said, ‘I know you don’t like me,’ it was strange. I said, where is this coming from? If for any reason she feels offended, I am sorry,” he said.

On the subject of film promotion and marketing strategies in Nigeria’s movie industry, Afolayan commended Akindele’s approach, urging aspiring creatives to study her methods for inspiration.

“I clearly told them that if you want to adopt a model that works for you today, follow Funke Akindele’s model. Funke started at a younger age… just look at her brand now. It’s consistent growth,” he added.

He explained that his own approach differs due to his extensive involvement across multiple sectors of the creative industry, including managing a resort, operating a cultural centre, and running a film academy.

“Do you know how many things I do? I run a resort, I have a cultural center in Lagos, I run an academy that trains people, and we have partners that aren’t even Nigerians. Film is my core. Film gave birth to all of these other ventures,” he said.

Afolayan emphasized that his previous comments were not intended to criticize Akindele or her methods in any way.

“I didn’t say she doesn’t dance. I have absolutely nothing against her,” he clarified.

His remarks come amid broader conversations about the future of Nollywood, particularly concerning sustainable film marketing and distribution models. Afolayan stressed the importance of acknowledging and learning from the successes of colleagues like Funke Akindele to strengthen the creative industry as a whole.
