Segun Sowunmi, a former media aide to ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has revealed plans to contest the Ogun State governorship election scheduled for 2027, citing the need for improved governance and accelerated development across the state.
The announcement was made during a virtual interactive meeting with his supporters and members of the media on Tuesday. During the session, Sowunmi explained that his decision to join the race stems from what he described as lingering governance challenges affecting Ogun State.
He highlighted several key areas of concern, including insecurity, declining standards in healthcare services, poor educational infrastructure, and inconsistent policy implementation. According to him, these challenges have significantly slowed the state’s growth and development.
Sowunmi also criticised the lack of continuity in government projects, arguing that successive administrations have failed to sustain or build upon programmes initiated by their predecessors. He stressed that sustainable development requires consistent policies that transcend political transitions.
The governorship aspirant further noted that Ogun State has not fully taken advantage of its geographical and economic proximity to Lagos State. He explained that the state’s location presents significant opportunities for economic expansion, which he believes have not been adequately utilised.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the condition of healthcare facilities in the state, Sowunmi described the situation as unacceptable. He specifically referenced the infrastructure at Sacred Heart Hospital in Abeokuta, noting that the facility should reflect a higher standard, considering its historical significance and the state’s potential to become a healthcare hub in the South-West region.
He emphasised that his vision for Ogun State centres on inclusive governance that benefits residents across all communities rather than serving only selected political or administrative interests. According to him, development should reach every part of the state, including rural and underserved areas.
While addressing his political future, Sowunmi acknowledged the ongoing internal disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, he stated that he is still engaging in consultations and closely observing political developments before formally announcing the party platform under which he will pursue his governorship ambition.
