Nwankwo Warns Nigerians of Electoral Chaos Over Senate’s Amendment to Electoral Act

Clement Nwankwo, convener of the Civil Society Situation Room, has raised concerns over the Senate’s recent passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Amendment Bill 2026, cautioning that the current version could jeopardize the integrity of future elections.

The controversy centers on the Senate’s rejection of a proposed amendment to Clause 60, Subsection 3, which sought to make real-time electronic transmission of election results mandatory. The upper chamber passed the bill during its third reading on Wednesday, but excluded this key provision.

Call for Continued Civic Engagement

Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Thursday, Nwankwo urged Nigerians to actively challenge the Senate’s position. He highlighted that several senators themselves were dissatisfied with how the decision was reached and noted that the bill, as passed, does not reflect the views of the majority of lawmakers.

He encouraged citizens to advocate for the version approved by the House of Representatives, which he said better incorporated public consultations and input from stakeholders.

Concerns Over Electoral Logistics and Credibility

Nwankwo warned that the Senate’s adjustments to election timelines could disrupt INEC’s logistics preparations and ultimately create electoral confusion.

“There is no way that these timelines the Senate has tampered with will hold in practice. What has happened will inevitably lead to electoral chaos,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of public engagement in shaping the final law.

He praised ongoing efforts by labor unions, media organizations, and citizens to raise awareness, noting that civic pressure is essential to ensure that the law reflects the broader public interest rather than only the views of those controlling the legislative gavel.

Citizens’ Role in Protecting Electoral Integrity

According to Nwankwo, Nigerians must continue speaking out, organizing protests, and lobbying for the retention of provisions that uphold transparency and credibility in elections. He stressed that the House of Representatives’ version aligns more closely with consultations and is therefore the preferable legal framework.

“Citizens must raise their voices, and the Situation Room will continue to monitor and act. The Senate’s current approach is not only out of step with the majority of lawmakers but also threatens the orderly conduct of elections,” he added.
