2Baba Faults Fela–Wizkid Debate, Says Cross-Era Comparisons Miss The Point

Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, widely known as 2Baba (or 2Face), has weighed in on the ongoing debate that places Wizkid alongside late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing the comparison as inappropriate.

Speaking in a preview of an upcoming episode of the Mic On podcast, the “African Queen” hitmaker said putting both artistes side by side overlooks the distinct periods they belonged to, as well as their different influences and contributions to Nigerian music. He stressed that such arguments diminish Fela’s legacy while also being unfair to Wizkid’s achievements.

According to him, the discussion itself is misplaced because each musician operated in separate eras with unique circumstances and impact. He maintained that equating their accomplishments does not properly reflect what either figure represents in the industry.

The renewed conversation followed recent controversy after Wizkid reacted to criticism from Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, by asserting that he is “bigger” than the late Afrobeat pioneer—remarks that triggered strong reactions across the entertainment space.

Adding her voice to the issue, media personality Yeni Kuti also criticised modern artistes who attempt to measure themselves against her father. She made the comments during an interview with Arise TV after joining relatives to receive Fela’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys.

Yeni noted that Fela’s continued global relevance nearly three decades after his passing already demonstrates the weight of his legacy. In her view, constant comparisons miss the essence of what he represents historically and culturally.

She advised contemporary musicians to channel their competitiveness toward their peers instead of trying to rank themselves against a late icon, urging them to respect Fela’s enduring contributions rather than diminish them through unnecessary comparisons.
