Edo PDP Urges Presidency to Intervene Over Alleged Threat by APC Acting Chairman

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in following allegations that the Acting Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Jarrett Tenebe, made threatening remarks toward a female critic of the state government.

In a statement released on Saturday by its Publicity Secretary, Dan Osa-Ogbegie, the opposition party condemned the reported comments, describing them as inappropriate and harmful to democratic values.

According to the PDP, reports suggested that Tenebe allegedly sought the identity and address of a woman who had criticised the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, and was quoted as making a statement interpreted as a serious threat to her safety. The party insisted that such language should not be dismissed as ordinary political talk.

The statement warned that intimidating citizens for expressing their opinions undermines democratic participation and could create a climate of fear. It characterised the situation as a troubling development in the state’s political environment.

The PDP also questioned repeated claims attributed to Tenebe and Governor Okpebholo that the APC would secure about 3.5 million votes for President Tinubu in a future presidential election. The party argued that publicly available figures from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicate that the total number of registered voters in Edo State is below 2.7 million.

Based on this discrepancy, the opposition suggested that such projections could raise concerns about possible voter pressure or irregularities if not properly clarified.

Consequently, the PDP urged the President to publicly distance himself from any rhetoric perceived as threatening and to caution party officials against actions that could be seen as undemocratic. It added that failing to respond might be interpreted as tacit approval.

The party further appealed to security and law-enforcement agencies to look into the alleged incident and take necessary steps, stressing that citizens should be free to express political views without fear of intimidation.
