Nollywood icon and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has recounted the frightening personal cost she paid during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, disclosing that her outspoken stance exposed her children to death threats and forced her to reassess her activism.

The actress, who has remained a prominent public figure for more than 30 years, shared the experience during an appearance on Rubbin’ Minds, a current-affairs programme on Channels Television aired on Sunday.

Looking back, Omotola described the protest period as the most dangerous phase of her advocacy life, noting that the level of hostility she faced was unlike anything she had experienced before.

She explained that while she was no stranger to online threats, the intensity during the #EndSARS movement stood out sharply compared to past encounters.

According to her, the situation became deeply unsettling when the threats extended beyond her to her family, particularly her children.

She revealed that receiving reports of death threats directed at her children marked a turning point for her, emotionally and mentally, as it crossed a line she never expected.

Omotola clarified that her involvement in the protests went far beyond social media engagement, stressing that she was physically present and actively involved in advocacy efforts.

She said she took part in street protests and also engaged the international community, granting interviews to global media platforms like CNN while holding discussions with foreign embassies and international non-governmental organisations.

The actress further disclosed that the harassment escalated from online intimidation to real-life encounters.

She explained that when people began showing up at her home and workplace in search of her, she realized the situation had become dangerous not just for her, but for those around her, prompting serious concern for their safety.
