Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has opened up about his political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that his current focus is centered on building opposition against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu rather than pursuing an elective office for himself.
The former governor made the remarks during a media interview where he addressed growing speculation surrounding his political ambitions and possible future aspirations.
El-Rufai Keeps Political Future Open
Although El-Rufai denied actively seeking any position at the moment, he stopped short of completely ruling out future participation in electoral politics.
He explained that politics remains dynamic and unpredictable, adding that circumstances can evolve quickly over time.
According to him, his immediate concern is contributing to efforts aimed at changing the country’s political direction in 2027.
He also acknowledged that he played a role in the emergence of the current administration but expressed disappointment with the government’s performance so far.
Focus Shifts To Opposition Coalition
Speaking further, the former minister stressed that his present political energy is directed toward supporting a stronger opposition movement capable of presenting Nigerians with an alternative leadership option.
Gossip News Now reports that recent political realignments have continued to fuel discussions around possible coalitions ahead of the next presidential election cycle.
El-Rufai suggested that those currently in power remain conscious of his political influence and capacity within the national space.
However, he maintained that his disagreement with President Tinubu should not be interpreted as a personal conflict.
‘Politics Is Not Personal’
Clarifying his position, the former Kaduna governor explained that political alliances can change once shared interests and objectives no longer align.
He noted that his relationship with Tinubu was largely shaped through their collaboration during the Muhammadu Buhari political era within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to him, differing visions for governance eventually created a separation in political direction.
He argued that political relationships should not automatically become hostile simply because former allies now hold opposing views.
Comments On Uba Sani And Emerging Alliances
Addressing rumours surrounding his relationship with Kaduna State governor Uba Sani, El-Rufai dismissed suggestions of a personal feud.
He described Uba Sani as someone politically close to him and insisted that any disagreement revolves around governance approaches rather than personal bitterness.
The former governor also admitted that some individuals currently involved in opposition discussions were previously his political rivals.
However, he emphasized that national interest may require politicians with different backgrounds and histories to work together.
Commentary And Political Analysis
The latest comments from Nasir El-Rufai further highlight the shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
While he has not formally declared interest in any office, his increasing criticism of the current administration and openness to opposition alliances suggest he could remain a major political figure in the coming years.
Analysts believe his influence within northern politics and his connections across different political blocs may shape coalition-building efforts as opposition parties attempt to strengthen their chances against the ruling APC.
Observers also note that his remarks reflect a broader trend in Nigerian politics where former allies often reposition themselves as national political dynamics evolve.
