Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign received a major boost on Friday night, January 10, as billionaire industrialist Abdul Samad Rabiu pledged a substantial financial reward to the Super Eagles following their 2-0 quarter-final triumph over Algeria.
Shortly after Nigeria secured their place in the semi-finals, Rabiu announced a cash incentive package aimed at motivating the team for the remainder of the tournament.
Taking to 𝕏, he wrote:
“Congratulations to our Super Eagles players on a brilliant victory against Algeria. You have lifted the spirit of the nation, and we proudly cheer you on as you prepare for the semi-finals.
“To encourage you, I pledge USD $500,000 to the players upon winning the semi-final, with an additional USD $50,000 for every goal scored.
“Should you go on to win the final, I further pledge USD $1,000,000, plus USD $100,000 for each goal scored in the final. Wishing you continued success as you carry Nigeria forward. Keep making Nigeria proud.”
The pledge followed a confident and commanding display by the Super Eagles, who struck twice early in the second half to put the contest beyond Algeria’s reach.
Just two minutes after the restart, Victor Osimhen rose unchallenged to head home a teasing cross from Bruno Onyemaechi, leaving the Algerian defence flat-footed. Nigeria’s momentum never faltered, and in the 57th minute, Osimhen turned provider with a precise pass to Akor Adams. Adams deceived the goalkeeper with a clever dummy and calmly lifted the ball into the net, doubling Nigeria’s lead.
Algeria tried to respond but were unable to penetrate Nigeria’s disciplined defence. The Super Eagles dominated possession, controlled the pace of the game, and looked comfortable even as the North Africans introduced fresh players in search of a comeback.
With this 2-0 victory, Nigeria advances to the semi-finals of AFCON 2025, where they will face the hosts, Morocco, on Wednesday, January 14.
