The political journey of Kano lawmaker Abdulmumin Jibrin has taken another turn, with the House of Representatives member now officially back in the All Progressives Congress following his departure from the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
His return was made public during a political gathering held on Sunday, where supporters openly celebrated the development. According to Gossip News Now, a video from the event showed the Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency representative changing into a cap branded with President Bola Tinubu’s symbol while APC loyalists cheered and waved party flags around him.
The move comes shortly after Jibrin’s relationship with the NNPP collapsed. His former party in Kano had announced his expulsion, accusing him of conduct they said ran against party interest and internal expectations.
NNPP officials in the state, led by Chairman Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, claimed that the lawmaker had engaged in anti-party actions and also failed to fulfill certain financial responsibilities. They further argued that his repeated public attacks on the party and its leadership made his continued stay impossible.
In their criticism, party leaders also questioned Jibrin’s political weight, insisting that his electoral relevance had been largely driven by the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement and the NNPP structure rather than by his personal influence alone.
Jibrin, however, did not resist the decision once it was announced. Instead, he acknowledged the expulsion and indicated that he was prepared to move on without creating further tension, even though he maintained that he had not been given a fair chance to defend himself against the accusations.
His response suggested a desire to avoid prolonging the crisis. Rather than escalate the disagreement, the federal lawmaker appealed for a peaceful separation, effectively closing that chapter before making his return to the APC.
Now back in the ruling party, Jibrin’s defection adds another layer to Kano’s already shifting political dynamics. Given his visibility and past political relevance, his re-entry into the APC is likely to generate fresh debate about alignments, loyalties, and power calculations in the state.
Commentary and Analysis
Jibrin’s return to the APC appears to be more than a routine party switch. It reflects the unstable nature of political alliances in Nigeria, where disagreements within party structures can quickly lead to major realignments.
His exit from the NNPP also highlights the growing strain that often emerges when influential politicians publicly challenge their own party leadership. Once internal disputes spill into the open, separation sometimes becomes only a matter of time.
At the same time, his decision to accept the expulsion and move on quietly may have helped him re-enter another platform without prolonging political damage. That calm transition could work in his favor as he tries to reposition himself ahead of future contests.
