“Abe, Wike Not APC Members, Lacks Authority Over Party – Chief Eze”

Fresh political debate has emerged in Rivers State after a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, openly criticized comments suggesting that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is the party’s leader in the state.

The controversy began after former senator Magnus Abe reportedly described Wike as the political head of the APC structure in Rivers. Eze, however, dismissed the statement as lacking relevance, arguing that individuals who are not registered members of the party cannot legitimately determine or assume leadership positions within it.

Party Membership Question Raised

In his response released on Wednesday, Eze insisted that neither Abe nor Wike currently belongs to the APC. According to him, this reality alone makes any declaration regarding party leadership from them inappropriate.

He explained that Magnus Abe had exited the APC before the 2023 elections to pursue the governorship race under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform. The move, Eze said, ultimately ended unsuccessfully, as Abe reportedly struggled to secure victory even within his own polling unit located in Bera Town of Gokana Local Government Area.

The APC figure also pointed out that Wike’s political standing is similarly uncertain following his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that the FCT minister cannot claim authority over the affairs of a party he does not officially belong to.

Questions Over Political Influence

Eze further argued that recent electoral outcomes do not support the notion that Wike controls the APC’s political machinery in Rivers State. As an example, he referenced the 2023 presidential election period, claiming that the former Rivers governor could not deliver electoral victory for his preferred candidate in his own voting unit.

According to Eze, the Labour Party reportedly secured the dominant result in that location, a development he believes undermines claims of overwhelming political influence.

For him, the controversy surrounding who leads the APC in Rivers is unnecessary, as party leadership is typically determined by internal structures and recognized members.

Historical Political Tensions

The APC chieftain also revisited earlier political developments in Rivers State politics. He alleged that during the 2019 electoral cycle, when Wike was serving as governor, actions taken by political actors and elements within the judiciary disrupted the APC’s ability to participate fully in elections within the state.

Eze suggested that Magnus Abe’s political alignment at the time played a role in that situation, adding that the relationship between the two figures has continued to raise questions within APC circles.

Criticism of Abe’s Statement

Expressing disappointment, Eze described Abe’s declaration as poorly informed and unnecessary. In his view, it reflects a misunderstanding of how political parties function, particularly regarding internal leadership hierarchies.

He also suggested that such remarks could embarrass individuals who once held respected positions within regional politics, especially within the Niger Delta.

According to Eze, proclaiming Wike as the APC’s leader in Rivers when he is not formally part of the party only exposes the claim to public criticism.

APC Leadership Recognition in Rivers

The APC chieftain concluded by stating that the party’s leadership structure in Rivers State has already been clarified by national authorities within the party.

He maintained that the APC leadership, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recognizes Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the party’s political leader in Rivers State.

For Eze, any attempt to promote an alternative narrative about party leadership is baseless and appears designed mainly to attract political attention rather than reflect the official position of the party.

Commentary and Analysis

The dispute highlights the ongoing political rivalry and realignment within Rivers State politics following the dramatic fallout between former allies in the region.

The debate about who holds influence over party structures reflects broader tensions between political factions competing for dominance ahead of future elections. In states with complex political histories like Rivers, leadership within parties often becomes a symbolic indicator of broader political control.

Eze’s comments also underscore a key principle in Nigerian party politics: formal membership often determines legitimacy within party hierarchies. While influential politicians may wield significant political power, party structures typically rely on official membership and internal recognition to determine leadership positions.

As Rivers politics continues to evolve, statements like these reveal how unresolved alliances and rivalries still shape the political conversation in the state.
