Abia Government Warns Opposition: “Your Attempt to Create Conflict Between Tinubu and Otti Will Fail”

The Abia State Government has issued a firm warning to opposition figures over efforts to manufacture tensions between Governor Alex Otti and President Bola Tinubu. The government accused former governors and past officeholders of orchestrating a political campaign aimed at destabilizing Otti’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections.

Rev. Fr. Christian Anokwuru, Special Adviser on Policies and Interventions to Governor Otti, described these maneuvers as deliberate attempts to exploit the president’s name for political gain. “Stop trying to fabricate a rift between Alex Otti and President Bola Tinubu; it will not succeed because their relationship goes beyond politics,” he asserted.

Opposition Tactics Under Scrutiny

According to Anokwuru, some opposition leaders have centered their criticisms on the federal government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda rather than engaging with factual governance issues. He warned that such tactics lack legitimacy when driven by personal ambition.

“When ex-governors and former public officials—whose legacies Abians have not forgotten—band together to challenge Dr. Alex Otti’s leadership, citizens have every right to question their motives, their claims, and their integrity,” Anokwuru emphasized, stressing the importance of issue-based engagement over political theatrics.

He further dismissed suggestions that the opposition enjoys presidential backing, noting that Tinubu continues to support Otti’s performance as one of Nigeria’s most effective governors. “The irony is that President Bola Tinubu has not aligned himself with the propaganda these attention seekers are spreading,” he said.

Politics of Resentment Cannot Prevail

Anokwuru argued that attempts to create animosity between Otti and the president are doomed, describing the opposition’s strategy as manufactured hostility. He urged political actors to focus on constructive criticism rather than exploiting presidential influence.

“What is even more troubling is the opposition’s heavy dependence on President Tinubu’s perceived influence. Proximity to power in Abuja cannot replace true grassroots acceptance, and it cannot erase the realities Abians endured under previous administrations,” he added.

He concluded with a pointed reminder that leveraging Tinubu’s name will not protect the opposition from accountability. “Tinubu is not supporting you; you are simply borrowing his name to support yourselves. This strategy weakens democracy and erodes public trust, rather than strengthening it,” Anokwuru noted.

Analysis

The statement highlights the ongoing tension between state-level governance and political maneuvering by opposition forces. Analysts suggest that this warning serves both as a reaffirmation of Otti’s political standing and as a caution to actors attempting to exploit presidential influence for short-term gains. By emphasizing grassroots legitimacy and constructive criticism, the Abia government is signaling a strategy to protect its political capital while maintaining strong ties with the federal administration.
