The Accord Party (AP) has moved to dispel reports suggesting that the party is experiencing internal divisions, insisting that such claims are inaccurate and politically motivated.
Party officials said the allegations of a factional crisis are being spread by individuals seeking to create confusion and weaken the party’s image ahead of future political contests.
In a statement released by Hon. Oke Rotimi Michael, who serves as the spokesperson for the Forum of State Chairmen in the South West and also leads the Accord Party in Ogun State, the organization strongly denied rumours circulating online.
Party Leadership Dismisses Suspension Rumours
One of the central claims addressed in the statement involved reports that the party’s National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, had been suspended from his position.
According to Hon. Oke, these reports are entirely false and should be disregarded by the public.
He explained that during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on December 3, 2025, members actually expressed confidence in Mgbudem’s leadership rather than taking disciplinary action against him.
The meeting reportedly ended with a vote of confidence in both the national chairman and the party’s National Working Committee, reinforcing the leadership’s legitimacy.
Accord Leadership Reaffirms Party Stability
The party also emphasized that its internal processes are guided by constitutional procedures and established regulations.
Hon. Oke noted that attempts to create division through unverified claims would not succeed, stressing that the party remains united and focused on its political goals.
According to him, the Accord Party continues to operate within its legal and organizational framework without disruption.
Response to Claims From Former Party Member
The statement also addressed remarks made by Prof. Chris Imumolen, a former presidential candidate of the party who has been associated with a group challenging certain decisions within the organization.
Imumolen had previously questioned the legitimacy of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s move to the Accord Party and suggested that the process surrounding the defection did not follow proper procedures.
However, Accord officials rejected those claims and maintained that the accusations lack credibility.
Party leaders explained that Imumolen is no longer a member of the party after being expelled for activities described as anti-party conduct.
Reasons Behind Imumolen’s Expulsion
According to the party’s account, the former member was removed due to several actions that allegedly disrupted party operations.
Officials listed a number of incidents that contributed to the disciplinary decision, including:
- Attempts to assume control of party structures without authorization
- Entering the party’s national secretariat forcefully in 2024
- Activities that allegedly created internal unrest within the organization
Because of these actions, the party leadership said statements coming from his camp should not be taken as representing the Accord Party.
Adeleke’s Defection and Candidacy Confirmed
Another key issue addressed in the statement was the political status of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Accord Party.
Party officials reaffirmed that Adeleke’s defection was properly processed and recognized by the organization.
The chairman of the party in Osun State, Pastor Victor Akande, also provided clarification on the timeline of events surrounding the governor’s entry into the party.
According to him:
- Adeleke officially joined the Accord Party on November 6, 2025
- His membership was publicly acknowledged on December 9, 2025
- He subsequently emerged as the party’s governorship candidate after the primary held on December 10, 2025
Call for Focus on Political Performance
Pastor Akande also addressed critics who have continued to question the party’s internal processes.
He urged political opponents to concentrate on presenting their achievements to voters rather than spreading allegations on social media platforms.
In his remarks, he emphasized that electoral success is determined by public support rather than online debates.
Commentary and Analysis
The Accord Party’s response reflects the intense political competition that often surrounds party realignments and high-profile defections.
When prominent figures such as Governor Adeleke change political platforms, rival factions frequently challenge the legitimacy of such moves, leading to disputes about party procedures and leadership authority.
By publicly clarifying its leadership structure and membership decisions, the Accord Party appears to be attempting to project unity and stability.
At the same time, the controversy highlights how internal disagreements and leadership conflicts can quickly evolve into broader political narratives.
For the Accord Party, maintaining organizational cohesion and managing public perception will be important as political activities intensify ahead of upcoming elections.
