ADC Accuses APC of Misinterpreting Criticism, Lacking Competence Amid US CPC Designation

The African Democratic Congress has taken aim at the ruling All Progressives Congress, accusing it of responding to serious national criticism with defensiveness rather than competence. The opposition party argued that the government has developed a habit of treating every tough question as an attack instead of confronting the deeper problems being raised.

The reaction followed recent comments linked to U.S. President Donald Trump, who designated Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern over reported attacks on Christians and also spoke about possible contingency measures if the situation remains unresolved. That development has sparked debate within Nigeria, especially around how the federal government should respond to growing international attention on insecurity.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the issue was being wrongly framed by the APC. According to him, neither his party nor the United States had accused the Nigerian government of deliberately targeting Christians. Rather, he suggested that the real problem lies in how poorly the authorities have handled the country’s wider security challenges.

Abdullahi maintained that the ruling party often reacts to criticism as though it were a personal or partisan assault, instead of seeing it as an opportunity for reflection and correction. In his view, this pattern has become one of the clearest signs of poor governance, especially in moments when the country needs thoughtful leadership and honest engagement.

Gossip News Now reports that Abdullahi also warned against dismissing the CPC designation as mere politics. He said the development should worry Nigerians because it reflects the way the country’s internal crisis is now being interpreted abroad, with the risk that external narratives could worsen already sensitive divisions at home.

He expressed discomfort that outsiders are increasingly defining Nigeria’s security situation in ways that could inflame religious tension. For him, the embarrassment is not only about the designation itself, but also about the image of a nation appearing unable to manage its own challenges before the international community steps in with troubling labels and warnings.

The ADC spokesman’s comments therefore went beyond criticizing the APC alone. They also raised broader concerns about national reputation, insecurity, and the consequences of failing to address domestic crises effectively before they are reframed by foreign powers.

At the center of his argument was the belief that competence matters more than outrage. Instead of reacting defensively, he suggested the government should focus on improving security management and addressing the conditions that have made such international scrutiny possible in the first place.

Commentary and Analysis

The ADC’s position reflects a familiar debate in Nigerian politics: whether criticism of government performance should be treated as hostility or as necessary pressure for improvement. Abdullahi’s remarks suggest that the APC’s biggest weakness, in his view, is not just policy failure but its tendency to confuse scrutiny with sabotage.

His warning about international framing is also important. Once domestic insecurity begins to be described from outside in religious or highly politicized terms, the narrative can become harder for Nigeria to control. That is why the issue is not only about what foreign leaders say, but about how effectively Nigerian authorities respond before those external interpretations gain even more ground.
