The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the formation of a 22-member Constitution Review Committee designed to enhance the party’s internal democracy, strengthen discipline, and improve administrative efficiency.
According to reports, the committee was officially inaugurated on Thursday at the ADC national secretariat in Abuja.
During the inauguration, ADC National Chairman Senator David Mark highlighted the importance of the party’s constitution in shaping its long-term direction. He described the constitution as the backbone that guides internal operations and safeguards democratic practices within the party.
Mark explained that the review exercise had become necessary due to the party’s continued expansion, noting that the constitution must evolve to reflect international democratic principles. He said the goal is to establish a more transparent, inclusive, and accountable framework that unites and empowers party members.
He urged committee members to consult widely with party stakeholders at all levels, uphold ADC’s founding principles, and produce a revised constitution that prioritizes fairness, transparency, and internal democracy.
The committee, chaired by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Etigwe Uwa (SAN), includes notable political figures such as former Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, former National Chairman Chief Ralph Nwosu, former Minority Leader Hon. Mohammed Kumaila, Senator E.Y. Orker Jev, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Professor Lawal Salihu, retired DIG Ibrahim Adamu, Professor Mohammed Sani Bello, and former House of Representatives member Hon. C.I.D. Maduabum, among others.
Their mandate is to assess the current ADC constitution, pinpoint areas requiring updates or clarification, and ensure the revised version aligns with global democratic norms, Nigerian electoral guidelines, and the Nigerian Constitution. Areas of focus will include inclusivity, transparency, party primaries, congress procedures, discipline, and conflict resolution. The committee will also pay special attention to the representation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities.
In his remarks, Committee Chairman Etigwe Uwa expressed confidence that the team would discharge its responsibilities diligently. He clarified that the intention was not to discard the existing constitution but to refine and strengthen it for better governance.
Uwa added that a well-structured constitution is essential to prevent internal conflicts and guarantee a credible, democratic process for selecting party leaders and candidates.
