ADC BoT Faction Disowns David Mark Coalition, Cautions Members Against Atiku, Obi

Internal disagreements within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have intensified following a strong rejection of a political coalition linked to former Senate President David Mark. A faction of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), aligned with factional National Chairman Nafiu Bala, has openly distanced itself from the initiative, describing it as an unauthorized arrangement that threatens the party’s internal order.

During a media briefing held in Abuja, the group’s secretary, Rufus Ekenmi, accused certain political figures of attempting to quietly enter the ADC through the coalition platform. He argued that the move represents an effort to manipulate the party’s structure for personal political interests rather than strengthening its democratic foundation.

According to Ekenmi, the alleged coalition does not have the blessing of the faction he represents and therefore cannot be regarded as a legitimate part of the party’s operations. He suggested that the development has introduced what he called a disruptive political influence capable of undermining party discipline.

As part of its response, the BoT faction urged the party leadership under Bala to enforce strict internal rules. The group recommended activating the ADC disciplinary committee to monitor and potentially sanction members who engage with individuals associated with the controversial coalition.

The faction also warned members against aligning with several prominent political figures said to be connected to the initiative. Among those mentioned were former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and other notable politicians including Nasir El-Rufai, Rauf Aregbesola, Liyel Imoke, Emeka Ihedioha, Abubakar Malami, and Babachir Lawal.

Ekenmi explained that engaging with the group behind the coalition could be interpreted as recognition of an alternative leadership structure within the ADC. Such actions, he argued, could weaken the party’s authority and create confusion among members nationwide.

Reacting to the public backing from the faction, Nafiu Bala assured supporters that his leadership would remain committed to the provisions of the party’s constitution. He emphasized that fairness, neutrality, and respect for internal procedures would guide every decision taken under his watch.

Bala also criticized members of the alleged coalition for reportedly operating from a separate office that he described as an unofficial secretariat. According to him, the ADC constitution clearly restricts access to party facilities and privileges to only recognized members in good standing.

He further stressed that any attempt to create a parallel command structure inside the party would not be tolerated. Bala insisted that maintaining organizational unity and discipline remains essential for the party’s political future.

Commentary and Analysis

The dispute highlights growing tensions within smaller political parties in Nigeria as alliances and coalitions begin to form ahead of future electoral cycles. Analysts suggest that the ADC’s internal divisions may reflect broader political realignments as influential figures explore new platforms for political collaboration.

If not carefully managed, the disagreement could weaken the party’s cohesion and public image. However, it could also serve as a test of the ADC’s internal governance framework and its ability to resolve disputes while maintaining its political identity.
