ADC Closely Watching Rivers State Political Developments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that it is closely observing the rising political tensions in Rivers State before issuing any formal statement.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, told Vanguard on Thursday,

“We’re studying political developments in Rivers. Let us study it, see what happens, and then take an informed position on the matter.”

Impeachment Proceedings Escalate Tensions

Rivers State has witnessed heightened political instability following the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu by the state House of Assembly.

The move has drawn attention due to Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), alongside a number of state lawmakers, which many had assumed would shield him from political threats.

On December 5, 2025, approximately 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. Fubara formally followed suit four days later, on December 9, joining the ruling party. The defections were widely seen as a strategic effort to secure his political survival.

Rising Rivalries With Wike

Despite the alignment with the APC, tensions have persisted between Governor Fubara and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Wike had previously warned that Fubara’s re-election could lead to his political downfall, while the governor asserted his authority in state politics, emphasizing his central role in the APC by referencing his party membership card numbered 001.

Repeated Impeachment Attempts

The 2026 impeachment marks the third attempt by the Rivers State House of Assembly to remove Fubara. The first occurred in 2023, followed by a second in 2025, just before a state of emergency was declared.

The latest effort leaves political observers questioning whether Fubara will survive the onslaught again or if the impeachment will finally succeed.
