The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed reports claiming the party planned to organise state and local government congresses to elect new officials, describing the information as false and unauthorized.
The clarification came after a notice circulated publicly suggesting that preparations were underway for internal elections across various levels of the party structure.
However, party leaders have now stated that the document did not originate from the official leadership of the ADC.
In a statement jointly issued by leaders of the ADC Chairmen’s Forum, the party expressed surprise that such a notice had been published and widely distributed.
The statement was signed by Hon. Kingsley Temitope Ogga, the ADC chairman in Kogi State, and Hon. Kennedy Odion, the party’s chairman in Edo State.
Both officials explained that the matter was discussed during a meeting with the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark, earlier in the week.
During the discussion, the national chairman reportedly clarified that the announcement about the supposed congresses did not come from his office.
According to the party leaders, Senator Mark also stated that he had no prior knowledge of the document and never authorized its release.
They further indicated that the publication was unknown to the National Working Committee (NWC), which is responsible for major organisational decisions within the party.
Following these revelations, the ADC leadership concluded that the notice was a forged document.
Party officials therefore urged members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the information entirely.
The Chairmen’s Forum stressed that the party currently has no plans to conduct state or local government congresses, contrary to the claims contained in the circulated notice.
They described the publication as invalid and lacking any official standing within the party’s organisational framework.
To prevent confusion among party members, the forum advised stakeholders to rely only on communications released through the official channels of the ADC.
In addition to rejecting the alleged congress announcement, the group reaffirmed its support for the current leadership of the party.
The statement emphasized the forum’s loyalty to the National Working Committee led by Senator David Mark.
Party leaders also reiterated their commitment to strengthening the ADC ahead of future political contests.
They expressed confidence that the party would continue preparing for upcoming elections, including the 2027 general elections, through legitimate and coordinated processes.
Commentary and Analysis
The controversy surrounding the alleged congress notice highlights how misinformation can quickly create confusion within political organisations.
In Nigeria’s competitive political environment, unauthorized announcements or forged documents can sometimes be used to trigger internal disputes or weaken party structures.
For political parties, maintaining clear communication channels is essential to prevent misunderstandings among members.
The ADC’s swift response to disown the notice suggests an effort to protect internal stability and reassure party stakeholders.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually begin across Nigeria’s political landscape, parties are increasingly focused on strengthening their organisational structures and leadership cohesion.
Ensuring that official decisions are communicated transparently will likely remain a key factor in maintaining unity within political organisations.
