Adeniyi Explains Why ADC Has Not Finalised Its 2027 Presidential Ticket

Political analyst Abiodun Adeniyi has shed light on why the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has yet to finalize its presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, attributing the delay to ongoing internal transitions and structural adjustments within the party.

Speaking on ARISE News, Adeniyi explained that ADC is still navigating a period of consolidation, cautioning against hasty decisions regarding its top ticket.

“The ADC is still in transition. They are not in a position to make definite decisions because the party hasn’t fully found its footing or attained the level of stability required,” he stated.

A key challenge, according to Adeniyi, lies in managing competition among high-profile figures vying for the presidency. The analyst emphasized that successful resolution depends on compromise and prioritizing unity.

“The question of who gets the ticket is sensitive, and they must handle it carefully. If everyone insists on being the candidate, there will be issues. But if they can make sacrifices and support the most popular figure—someone capable of challenging the ruling party—then they can make significant progress,” Adeniyi explained.

In addition to discussing party dynamics, Adeniyi highlighted former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s political prospects. At 60, Tambuwal remains a viable contender for future presidential ambitions, although he has not formally declared interest in the 2027 race.

“Tambuwal still has a lot to offer. The presidency remains a possibility for him. He hasn’t openly declared interest in 2027, but I believe it is still an ambition he may pursue,” Adeniyi noted, commending his measured approach to politics.

The analyst praised Tambuwal’s restraint, citing his refusal to respond in kind to public criticism from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. Adeniyi suggested that such discipline mirrors the ADC’s current stage of development—calm and strategic, awaiting stability before major decisions are made.

“He remains measured and respectful. He has highlighted Wike’s past support without bitterness or confrontation. His restraint reflects the ADC’s own stage of development—until the party becomes more stable, nothing is certain,” Adeniyi added.

Adeniyi also indicated that Tambuwal could leverage his popularity to return to the Senate on the ADC platform, should he choose to do so.

“I believe he can return to the Senate under ADC, given his long-standing popularity dating back to 2003 when he began his political journey,” he said.

Commentary: The ADC’s cautious handling of its 2027 ticket illustrates the complexities of opposition politics in Nigeria. Balancing multiple ambitions within a developing party requires patience, strategic negotiation, and compromise. Analysts suggest that Tambuwal’s disciplined approach could set a precedent for other contenders and help strengthen internal cohesion as the party positions itself for the next general election.
