Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 triumph over Mozambique in the round of 16 at the Fes Sports Complex on Monday was briefly punctuated by a minor flare-up between Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen and winger Ademola Lookman.
The Napoli forward, who scored twice during the match, appeared frustrated midway through the second half when Lookman opted not to release a pass in a promising scoring position. The brief tension caught the attention of spectators and prompted a momentary stir on the Nigerian bench, even as the team’s control of the game remained unshaken.
Eyewitnesses noted the incident around the 63rd minute, with Osimhen confronting Lookman directly, gesturing emphatically, and pulling away from captain Wilfred Ndidi, who attempted to intervene. Moments later, Osimhen signaled for a substitution and was replaced in the 70th minute by Moses Simon, eliciting scattered boos from sections of the crowd.
Despite the flashpoint, Nigeria’s dominance never wavered. Lookman and Akor Adams each found the net, complementing Osimhen’s brace and cementing Nigeria’s place in the quarter-finals of AFCON 2025.
Speaking after the match, Lookman downplayed the friction, framing it as a natural and emotional aspect of competitive football.
“Victor is our main man,” Lookman said. “He’s a world-class striker and very important to the team. These things happen, but they don’t affect our unity. I always play for the team—whether it’s a goal or an assist, the badge comes first. Victor’s drive pushes all of us. We understand each other and keep moving forward. We stay composed, respect decisions, and focus on what’s next.”
The Atalanta winger added that Osimhen remains his “brother,” emphasizing that the exchange was insignificant relative to the team’s overall success.
Statistically, Nigeria’s attacking output has been formidable throughout the tournament. Osimhen has tallied three goals and three assists, while Lookman has contributed three goals and four assists, underscoring their combined influence on the team’s offensive strength.
Nonetheless, the moment sparked online debate, with clips circulating showing Osimhen visibly frustrated at the missed pass. Critics questioned the striker’s reaction, while others highlighted Lookman’s contributions, noting he had already created multiple clear opportunities by that stage, one of which resulted in a goal and another finished by Akor Adams.
Nigeria now turns attention to the quarter-finals, where they are slated to face either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo on January 10.
