Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has shared his mixed feelings at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after missing the opportunity to feature alongside his younger brother, Tom, on Nigeria’s biggest continental stage.

Both brothers were named in Nigeria’s expanded 54-man provisional squad announced in early December ahead of the tournament. However, when the list was reduced to the final travelling squad for Morocco, only Fisayo retained his place, with Tom narrowly missing out.

Currently on the books of Serie A club Lazio, Fisayo has been an important figure for Nigeria during the group phase. He featured prominently in victories against Tanzania and Uganda, helping the Super Eagles secure maximum points and finish top of Group C.

Despite Nigeria’s flawless group-stage performance, the midfielder admitted that the absence of his brother cast a shadow over what should have been a purely celebratory moment for him and his family.

Speaking in an interview with Victor Modo, Fisayo revealed that the entire family had been eagerly anticipating the possibility of seeing both brothers represent Nigeria together.

“It was something the whole family was looking forward to, but unfortunately, he didn’t make the final squad,” he said.

The 24-year-old explained that sharing the pitch in national colours with his brother would have been a deeply meaningful milestone, not just for the siblings but also for those who have supported their journey.

Nevertheless, Fisayo remains optimistic that the moment will come. He insists the setback has only strengthened their resolve and believes they will eventually wear the Super Eagles jersey together.

With the group stage now behind them, Nigeria are preparing for a Round of 16 showdown against Mozambique as they continue their push for another AFCON title.
