Nigeria’s Super Eagles midfielder, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, has opened up about his bittersweet experience at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, revealing his disappointment at missing the opportunity to share the pitch with his younger brother, Tom.
Both siblings had initially been included in Nigeria’s expanded 54-man provisional squad announced in early December. However, when the roster was trimmed to the final travelling squad for Morocco, only Fisayo secured a place, leaving Tom just short of making the cut.
Currently representing Serie A side Lazio, Fisayo has been pivotal for Nigeria during the group stage, playing a key role in victories over Tanzania and Uganda. His contributions helped the Super Eagles top Group C with maximum points.
Despite the team’s flawless group-stage performance, Fisayo admitted that not having his brother alongside him slightly dulled what should have been an entirely celebratory experience for him and his family.
Speaking with Victor Modo, Fisayo revealed that their family had been eagerly anticipating the prospect of seeing both brothers represent Nigeria together on football’s biggest African stage.
“It was something the whole family was looking forward to, but unfortunately, he didn’t make the final squad,” Fisayo said.
The 24-year-old midfielder explained that sharing national colours with Tom would have been a significant milestone, not only for them as siblings but also for all those who have supported their footballing journey from the start.
Nevertheless, Fisayo remains hopeful that the opportunity will come. He stressed that the setback has strengthened both brothers’ determination and believes that one day they will proudly don the Super Eagles jersey together.
With the group stage concluded, Nigeria now turn their attention to the Round of 16, where they will face Mozambique in pursuit of another Africa Cup of Nations title.
