Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has emphasized that Nigeria must approach their quarter-final tie against Algeria with a strong mentality and a sharp eye for goals as they clash today in Marrakesh at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Both sides enter the knockout match in excellent form. Nigeria have won all four of their games, scoring 12 goals and conceding four, while Algeria also boast a perfect record, having secured victory in every match and allowed just one goal.

Speaking during Friday’s pre-match press conference, Chelle delivered a straightforward message: scoring goals and staying mentally composed under pressure will determine the outcome at the Marrakesh Stadium.

“To win this game, we need to score. It’s that simple,” Chelle said.

“We study the match, identify the opponent’s weaknesses, and show the players where we can break through. It’s the same process every time — and Algeria’s coach thinks the same way.”

He highlighted that while targeting Algeria’s weaknesses is essential, the significance of a quarter-final clash requires a strong mindset.

“This is a major competition. Your mental approach is crucial. You must cope with pressure, deal with your opponent, and follow the coach’s instructions. We work every day in training to prepare for moments like this.”

A win for Nigeria would also carry emotional weight, as many supporters still remember Algeria’s dramatic victory over the Super Eagles in the 2019 AFCON semi-final, where a late free kick ended Nigeria’s title hopes.

Midfielder Frank Onyeka reinforced his coach’s optimism, noting that Nigeria’s clinical attack has been instrumental to their success in Morocco. The Brentford star praised the team’s ability to convert opportunities into goals.

“Our strikers are scoring. That’s been a big part of our progress in this tournament,” Onyeka said.

“We’re ready. Alex [Iwobi] is doing what he always does—linking play and driving the team forward. Wilfred is controlling the midfield, and I focus on my own role.”

The Nigeria vs Algeria quarter-final kicks off at 5 p.m. today, January 10.
