AFCON 2025: Osimhen Ndidi and Lookman Propel Super Eagles Into Round of 16

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured an early spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tunisia in their Group C clash on Tuesday, December 27.

Goals from Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman put Nigeria in command before a late Tunisian fightback added drama to the final stages. The win gives the Super Eagles a perfect record after two matches and confirms their qualification with one game to spare.

Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, reacting fastest inside the box to steer Nigeria ahead with an assist from Lookman. The first-half goal set the tone for a dominant second half.

Five minutes into the second half, Ndidi extended the lead with a well-placed header from a cross, marking his first goal for the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian attack continued to thrive, and in the 67th minute, Lookman completed a fluid team move, calmly finishing off a pass from Osimhen to make it 3-0.

Tunisia, however, refused to concede quietly. Montassar Talbi pulled one back in the 74th minute, rekindling hope for the Carthage Eagles. The tension rose further when Ali Abdi converted a penalty in the 87th minute, reducing the deficit to a single goal.

Despite the late surge, Nigeria held firm to secure a crucial win, remaining top of Group C with six points. Tunisia sit second on three points, while Tanzania and Uganda are yet to claim a victory.

With qualification already guaranteed, Nigeria can approach their final group match against Uganda with confidence. Meanwhile, Tunisia faces pressure ahead of their final group game against Tanzania on Tuesday, December 30.
