The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be aiming for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) crown when the 2025 tournament kicks off in Morocco later this month.

Nigeria last won the competition in 2013, and none of the players from that title-winning squad feature in Eric Chelle’s current team. However, the squad still boasts several of Africa’s top stars, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

While expectations among Nigerian supporters are measured following recent disappointments — including failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and an unconvincing pre-AFCON friendly outing — the tournament presents an opportunity for redemption.

Beyond the quest for continental glory, there is also significant financial motivation. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has continued to raise prize money for its flagship competition, with AFCON 2025 maintaining a total prize pool of $32 million, the same figure recorded at the previous edition.

Nigeria have already secured $350,000 for finishing top of their qualification group. Additional earnings will depend on how far the team progresses in the tournament.

AFCON 2025 Prize Money Structure

  • Group stage (4th place): $500,000
  • Group stage (3rd place): $700,000
  • Round of 16: $800,000
  • Quarter-finals: $1.3 million
  • Semi-finals: $2.5 million
  • Runner-up: $4 million
  • Champion: $7 million

Should the Super Eagles go all the way and lift the trophy in Morocco, their total earnings would rise to $11.6 million, equivalent to approximately ₦17.4 billion.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
