The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco has made history, becoming the tournament’s highest-scoring edition since its inception.
With 120 goals already scored, this year’s championship has overtaken the previous all-time record of 119 goals, set during the last AFCON hosted in Ivory Coast.
This milestone was reached even before the third-place meeting between Nigeria and Egypt and the final showdown between host nation Morocco and defending champions Senegal.
The earlier record of 119 goals came during the expanded 24-team tournament at AFCON 2023 in Ivory Coast. Prior to that, the 2019 edition in Egypt produced a total of 102 goals. The 2025 tournament has now topped both, boosted by the dominance and attacking brilliance of some of Africa’s top forwards.
Morocco’s Brahim Diaz leads the goal chart with five goals, followed closely by Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who have each struck four times.
Osimhen’s standout performances have also earned him admiration off the field. Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan described the Galatasaray striker as his favourite forward in world football during a conversation with Rio Ferdinand on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.
“Victor Osimhen. Victor Osimhen plays with heart. He gives everything,” Gyan said. “I’m surprised the big clubs in the world did not come for him. I’m appealing to Manchester United to come for him.”
