The Super Eagles of Nigeria delivered a commanding performance on January 10, defeating Algeria 2-0 to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Goals early in the second half from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed the quarter-final encounter, as Nigeria outplayed their North African opponents.
After a cautious opening, the breakthrough came just two minutes into the second half. A teasing cross from Bruno Onyemaechi caught Algeria’s defence off guard, allowing Osimhen to rise and powerfully head the ball into the net from close range.
Algeria tried to respond but found it difficult to breach Nigeria’s well-organised defence. The Super Eagles maintained control, and in the 57th minute, they doubled their lead with a move of exceptional quality.
Osimhen turned provider, threading a perfectly timed pass to Akor Adams. The forward kept his composure, deceived the goalkeeper with a clever dummy, and calmly slotted the ball into the net.
From that point, Nigeria appeared firmly in control. The Super Eagles dominated possession, created the clearest chances, and looked capable of extending their lead further. Adams nearly added a second goal when his header struck the post, while Alex Iwobi and Bright Osayi-Samuel tested Algeria’s defensive organisation.
Algeria, coached by Vladimir Petkovic, struggled to match Nigeria’s intensity and fluid movement. Substitutions, including the withdrawal of Riyad Mahrez on the hour mark, failed to change the momentum. Their attacking output was minimal, with no shots on target and an expected goals (xG) statistic reflecting a frustrating evening.
Nigeria faced a minor concern when Wilfred Ndidi was forced off with an injury midway through the second half. However, coach Eric Chelle’s tactical adjustments kept the team’s rhythm intact. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali remained largely untroubled, as Nigeria managed the game intelligently through six minutes of added time.
The match statistics highlighted Nigeria’s dominance: 13 shots to Algeria’s three, nearly 60% possession, and five clear-cut scoring chances. Algeria, in contrast, were limited to speculative attempts and spent much of the match chasing the ball.
Victor Osimhen was named man of the match, bringing his tournament tally to four goals.
With this victory, the Super Eagles advance to the 2025 AFCON semi-finals, where they will face host nation Morocco on Wednesday, January 14.
