Tanzania head coach Manuel Gomandi has lauded his players for their spirited performance against Nigeria, despite the Taifa Stars opening their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 campaign with a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday night.
The Group C clash, held in Fès, saw Tanzania challenge one of Africa’s football powerhouses and earn praise for a display that exceeded pre-match expectations. Nigeria secured the win with goals from Semi Ajayi in the first half and Ademola Lookman in the second.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Gomandi highlighted his team’s determination and tactical approach.
“Considering the difference in quality and experience, I am very proud of my players. Many expected us to simply defend, but that is not my philosophy,” he said.
Tanzania fell behind in the 36th minute when Ajayi converted a cross from Alex Iwobi. The East Africans responded strongly after halftime, with Kokola M’mombwa pulling a goal back in the 50th minute. However, Nigeria restored their lead just two minutes later through Lookman’s precise finish.
Gomandi praised his squad for their resilience and discipline, particularly against a Super Eagles side coached by Eric Chelle.
“Despite conceding from a corner, my players showed great character and fought hard throughout the match,” he added.
Tanzania also created opportunities and tested Nigeria’s defence, showing a willingness to play positively rather than adopt a purely defensive stance.
The team now turns its attention to a crucial Group C clash against regional rivals Uganda on Saturday, a match that could determine their chances of progressing further in the tournament. Uganda enters the game following a 3-1 defeat to Tunisia in the group’s other opening fixture.
