Stanley Nwabali became Nigeria’s hero on Saturday, January 17, as the Super Eagles secured a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Egypt to claim the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
After more than 95 minutes of goalless action filled with near misses and VAR reviews, it was Nwabali’s composure and sharp reflexes that decided the match. The goalkeeper made two crucial saves in the shootout, ensuring Nigeria’s hard-fought win and a podium finish to conclude their tournament.
The third-place clash between Nigeria and Egypt was far from a consolation match. Both sides played with intensity, backed by a passionate crowd of 38,113 fans who created a vibrant atmosphere for the continental showdown.
Nigeria briefly thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Akor Adams powered a close-range header into the net following a well-crafted move. However, celebrations were halted after VAR ruled the goal out for a foul in the buildup, leaving the Super Eagles visibly frustrated.
The second half followed a similar narrative, with Nigeria enjoying spells of possession while Egypt countered through Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Early in the half, Ademola Lookman had a goal disallowed for offside, adding to Nigeria’s frustration.
Injuries and substitutions disrupted the flow as the game progressed. Semi Ajayi was forced off late, and head coach Éric Chelle introduced fresh legs in search of a breakthrough that never came. Despite several dangerous moments at both ends, neither team could break the deadlock in regulation or extra time, making penalties inevitable.
The shootout tested nerves, and Nigeria held their composure. Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, and Ademola Lookman all converted their kicks. Egypt scored through Rami Rabia and Mahmoud Saber, but the pressure proved too much for their key players, handing the Super Eagles the bronze medal.
