Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has defended the Minister of Interior, Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, following allegations that he forged his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Agbese described the claim as a fabricated plot by political opponents seeking to discredit the minister due to his performance and rising influence in government.
He argued that the allegation was part of a coordinated smear campaign aimed at undermining one of President Bola Tinubu’s key cabinet members.
“These allegations are nothing but political noise from enemies of progress who cannot stand the pace of reform and innovation that Dr. Tunji-Ojo has brought to governance,” Agbese said. “Whenever a young and effective leader begins to change the old order, the usual tactic is to dig up fake scandals. But Nigerians are wiser now.”
Agbese praised the minister’s achievements, noting significant improvements in the passport processing system, immigration services, and correctional facilities since Tunji-Ojo assumed office.
He highlighted the clearing of over 200,000 passport backlogs in three weeks, the rollout of digital processing systems, and the establishment of new passport offices abroad to better serve Nigerians in the diaspora.
The lawmaker also credited Tunji-Ojo with reforms in correctional institutions, including prison decongestion, enhanced security systems, and improved welfare for personnel in paramilitary agencies.
“Performance is the best proof of integrity,” Agbese stated. “Those peddling falsehoods should focus on delivering results rather than cooking up lies.”
He cautioned against the use of social media to wage character-assassination campaigns, urging that any genuine concerns be handled through legal and institutional channels.
Agbese concluded by expressing confidence in the minister’s integrity, describing him as a key player in the federal government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
