The former national president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, has confirmed that the guild’s newly elected president, Abubakar Yakubu, was involved in a tragic car accident that resulted in the death of a child.
Gossip News Now earlier reported that Yakubu was arrested on Tuesday night following the fatal crash in Surulere, Lagos.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Rollas explained that Yakubu’s vehicle suffered a sudden brake failure, leading to a collision that caused the child’s death and left the mother injured. She is currently receiving medical treatment.
Rollas added that Yakubu cooperated fully with law enforcement and emergency responders at the scene. He also disclosed that AGN leaders have visited the bereaved family to offer condolences and support, noting that Yakubu is deeply devastated by the incident.
The statement reads in part:
“The Actors Guild of Nigeria is deeply saddened to confirm the involvement of the National President-elect, Mr. Abubakar Yakubu, in a tragic road accident that occurred on Tuesday, 9th December, in Lagos.
“The accident resulted from an unexpected mechanical brake failure, leading to a collision that unfortunately claimed the life of a child and injured the child’s mother, who is currently receiving medical care.
“Mr. Yakubu cooperated fully with law enforcement and emergency responders. The Guild Leadership has since visited the affected family to offer condolences, emotional support, and solidarity.
“The matter has been resolved amicably with the family, with a shared understanding that this was a tragic accident with no intentional fault. The family has shown remarkable grace, and we appreciate their understanding.
“Mr. Abubakar Yakubu is hale and hearty but deeply shaken by the heartbreaking event. He expresses profound sorrow and extends prayers for the soul of the departed child and the mother’s recovery.”
Rollas further urged the public and AGN members to refrain from speculation, emphasizing that accidents are painful reminders of life’s fragility.
He appealed for privacy and respect for all parties as they navigate this difficult period.
