Veteran Nollywood actor Akin Lewis has opened up about the unexpected collapse of his first marriage, admitting that he still struggles to understand why it ended.

Gossip News Now reports that Lewis described the breakup as one of the most painful experiences of his life, noting that even after many years, the reasons behind his wife’s decision remain a mystery to him.

The actor shared his reflections during a recent appearance on the African A-List Podcast, where he discussed love, personal loss, and his long career in the Nigerian film industry.

“The sudden end of that marriage shook me deeply and changed how I see relationships and people,” Lewis said. “It was one of the saddest times in my life, and it left questions I never got answers to. Even after all these years, it remains a mystery to me.”

He added that, despite the heartbreak, he chose not to let the experience define him. Instead, he focused on personal growth, his career, and gaining a deeper understanding of life. The setback, he explained, helped him become stronger and more committed to his craft.

During the discussion, Lewis also addressed criticisms from some film producers regarding the fees charged by veteran actors in Nollywood. He argued that such complaints reflect a lack of respect for decades of dedication and hard work.

Having spent over five decades building a career across film and theatre, with extensive formal training and continuous learning, Lewis emphasized that seasoned actors deserve fair compensation and professional treatment.

“Experienced actors should not be expected to work for less or feel lucky just to be cast in films,” he said. “Anyone who wants my service must be ready to meet professional standards, including proper payment, respect, and fair treatment.”
