The remains of former lawmaker Godiya Akwashiki have been returned to Nigeria, marking a solemn moment for his family, political associates, and supporters. His body arrived at the cargo section of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where members of the Social Democratic Party gathered to pay their respects.
Among those present to receive him were the party’s acting National Chairman, Sadiq Gombe, and its 2023 presidential flag bearer, Adewole Adebayo. Their presence reflected the deep connection between the late senator and the SDP, where he remained a respected figure throughout his political journey.
However, notable members of the Senate leadership, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, were not in attendance. Explaining this absence, Gombe noted that lawmakers were currently observing a legislative recess, while emphasizing that the loss remains deeply felt across the country and within political circles.
Also present at the airport reception were several prominent personalities, including former Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Al-Makura, federal lawmaker Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, and former Information Minister Labaran Makun. Their attendance underscored the respect and recognition Akwashiki commanded throughout his public service career.
The late senator, who represented the Nasarawa North Senatorial District, died on December 31, 2025, after a prolonged illness while receiving medical care in India. His return to Nigeria paves the way for funeral rites and final tributes from constituents and political allies.
Paying tribute, Adebayo described Akwashiki as an outstanding individual whose leadership qualities left a lasting impression. He noted that the senator’s passing has created a gap that will be difficult to fill, particularly given his contributions to governance and representation. Similarly, Gombe highlighted that the loss extends beyond his immediate constituency, affecting both his party and the nation at large.
