Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has reacted to the Federal Government’s withdrawal of the criminal defamation charges previously filed against her.
Gossip News Now earlier reported that the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) struck out the case on Thursday after the government formally discontinued the action.
Speaking to journalists, Akpoti-Uduaghan said the development validated her stance and strengthened her faith in Nigeria’s justice system.
“Today’s judgment reinforces my trust in the rule of law. I remain dedicated to serving the people of Kogi Central and safeguarding the democratic rights of Nigerians,” she stated.
The senator also thanked her legal representatives, supporters, and constituents for their unwavering encouragement throughout the legal battle.
The case was dismissed after the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) submitted a notice indicating its decision to discontinue prosecution.
The withdrawn charges, which had sparked significant national discourse about freedom of speech and political responsibility, were tied to remarks the senator allegedly made during a televised interview.
The notice of discontinuance—dated December 12, 2025—formally ended proceedings in suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/195/2025.
Justice C. N. Oji, who presided over the matter, accepted the notice and issued an order striking out the charges. The judge emphasized the importance of responsible use of prosecutorial authority.
“The court hopes this decision encourages restraint, promotes healing, and strengthens respect for the rule of law in our democratic space,” Justice Oji remarked.
A government lawyer also confirmed the withdrawal in court, stating that the action aligned with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
“This step is taken in the interest of justice and to maintain public confidence in our legal institutions,” the counsel affirmed.
