A political shake-up has emerged within the Akwa Ibom State Government following the dismissal of two aides linked to activities surrounding the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to Gossip News Now, Governor Umo Eno approved the removal of the officials after reports surfaced that they attended the PDP gathering despite alleged instructions advising against such participation.
The individuals affected by the decision are Joseph Jacob Ikpak, who previously served as Senior Special Assistant on Support Services, and Felix Ekuri, the Special Assistant responsible for Neighbourhood Watch affairs.
Their removal from office was officially confirmed in a statement released in Uyo by the Secretary to the State Government, Enobong Uwah.
The statement described the action as part of a broader effort by the state administration to restructure its political and governance framework in line with the administration’s development agenda.
However, sources within the government have suggested that the dismissals were closely tied to the aides’ presence at the PDP national convention.
Photographs circulating online reportedly showed both men at the Ibadan event, fueling speculation that their participation triggered the governor’s reaction.
Officials inside Government House in Uyo indicated that the situation has heightened internal tension within the administration.
In response to the developments, Governor Eno has reportedly summoned an emergency meeting involving all political aides within the government.
A senior official revealed that notices for the meeting were distributed through the office of the Secretary to the State Government, signalling the seriousness of the issue.
The controversy comes months after Governor Eno’s high-profile political shift from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June, a move that has reshaped the political dynamics within the state.
Since that transition, questions regarding loyalty among government appointees have become more visible.
Many officials who were appointed during the PDP era are believed to still maintain political ties with the party and with former Governor Udom Emmanuel, under whose administration several of them rose to prominence.
Disagreements have also surfaced regarding the distribution of government appointments, particularly between long-standing APC members and political figures who moved to the ruling party alongside the governor.
Adding another dimension to the unfolding political story, Ini Ememobong, a former commissioner who chose not to follow Governor Eno into the APC, recently emerged as the PDP’s national spokesperson during the same Ibadan convention.
Commentary and Analysis
The dismissal of the two aides highlights the complex political balancing act facing leaders who switch party allegiance while still governing administrations built under their former political platforms.
For Governor Eno, maintaining cohesion within his government may prove challenging as loyalists of different political camps compete for influence and recognition.
Political analysts suggest that internal realignment often follows such defections, particularly when appointments, party loyalty, and ideological commitments collide.
Another issue likely to shape future developments is how the governor manages relationships with former allies who remain active in the PDP.
The emergence of Ini Ememobong as the party’s spokesperson at the national level indicates that Akwa Ibom continues to play a notable role within opposition politics despite the governor’s new affiliation.
As the administration moves forward, the planned meeting with political aides may serve as a crucial moment for clarifying expectations and reaffirming loyalty within the government.
Whether the situation leads to further changes within the administration remains a development many political observers will be watching closely.
