Alleged Thugs Humiliate Obaseki’s Relative in Benin City

An incident involving the reported assault of a businessman related to former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki has stirred concern in Benin City. The individual, identified as Don Pedro Obaseki, who runs Hosamudia Farm, was allegedly attacked and publicly humiliated by a group believed to be thugs.

According to accounts from witnesses, the episode began at a local sports ground located within Uwa Primary School. Pedro Obaseki had reportedly visited the venue to participate in a football game when he was confronted by a group of men.

Reports indicate that the situation escalated quickly. The group allegedly stripped him and paraded him through sections of the city in what observers described as a humiliating spectacle.

After the confrontation, the attackers reportedly escorted him toward the palace of Oba Ewuare II. At the entrance of the palace, he was allegedly forced to kneel while the group spoke with palace security personnel.

Witnesses claim the men told the palace guards that the individual they brought had committed an offense against the monarch. They reportedly described him using the local term “Oghion,” which is sometimes interpreted as an adversary of the Oba.

However, palace authorities reportedly clarified that the monarch was not inside the palace at the time of the incident. Officials explained in the Bini language that the Oba had travelled to the Holy Arousa Cathedral for a thanksgiving service marking the conclusion of the traditional Igue Festival.

One of the palace chiefs reportedly cautioned the group against creating disorder at the palace. He warned that unrest would not be tolerated, especially during a period of important religious and cultural observance.

Despite the tension that accompanied the situation, palace officials eventually intervened. Sources say the chiefs escorted Pedro Obaseki into the palace grounds to prevent further confrontation.

The incident has attracted wider public attention partly because of Pedro Obaseki’s relationship with the former governor. The episode also occurred shortly after public remarks made by Godwin Obaseki concerning the responsibilities that accompany political power.

In a video circulated online, the former governor criticized politicians who accumulate wealth after gaining public office. His comments suggested that leadership should be guided by moral responsibility rather than personal enrichment.

In the message shared on social media, Obaseki emphasized that power must be used in service of the people and in accordance with ethical values. He warned that leaders who misuse authority for private gain would ultimately face consequences.

He also stated that he remains satisfied with his time in office and does not regret the decisions made during his administration.

Commentary and Analysis

The alleged attack highlights continuing concerns about mob action and public humiliation in parts of Nigeria. Incidents where individuals are publicly punished without due legal process often raise serious questions about the rule of law.

Benin City, historically known for its rich cultural heritage and the authority of the Benin monarchy, rarely witnesses events that draw such widespread attention. When incidents occur near important cultural institutions, they tend to attract strong reactions from both the public and traditional leaders.

The involvement of palace officials in calming the situation appears to have prevented the confrontation from escalating further. Their intervention underscores the stabilizing role that traditional institutions can sometimes play in moments of tension.

Another dimension of the episode lies in its political undertone. Because the victim is related to a prominent political figure, public debate has quickly linked the incident to broader political narratives in the state.

Regardless of political interpretations, the situation underscores the need for stronger protection of citizens and adherence to legal procedures. Public humiliation and vigilante actions undermine confidence in institutions meant to uphold justice.
