Amaechi Promises 50% Female Representation in Cabinet if Elected President

Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has announced that women would occupy half of all ministerial appointments should he win Nigeria’s presidential election in 2027.

The former minister made the pledge during an event in Lagos where the Nigerian chapter of the World Women Organisation was officially launched.

Speaking as the special guest of honour, Amaechi outlined his vision for a more inclusive government, insisting that gender should not be used as a barrier to leadership opportunities.

Equal Representation Plan

The politician, who earlier declared his presidential ambition under the African Democratic Congress, explained that his administration would pursue a balanced cabinet structure.

If elected, he said the federal executive council—typically composed of about forty-two ministers—would be split evenly between men and women.

According to Gossip News Now, Amaechi emphasized that the distribution would not be symbolic but designed to ensure women play a central role in governance.

Youth Inclusion Also Part of the Proposal

Beyond gender representation, Amaechi noted that his cabinet plan would also prioritize younger Nigerians.

He suggested that a number of the ministerial positions would be reserved for youth representatives, including young women, to strengthen generational participation in government decision-making.

In his view, leadership appointments should reflect both diversity and competence rather than political patronage.

Merit-Based Appointments

During the event, Amaechi maintained that individuals selected for government roles must demonstrate the ability and readiness to perform effectively.

He stressed that the principle of merit would apply across all appointments regardless of gender or political background.

The former governor added that women, lawmakers, and younger leaders would only earn roles through capability and preparedness rather than political favour.

Reflection on Past Advocacy

Amaechi also referenced his political history to highlight previous efforts aimed at improving women’s rights.

While serving as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, he supported legislative initiatives designed to address harmful practices affecting widows.

He argued that certain cultural norms, educational barriers, and internal divisions have historically slowed women’s advancement in political leadership.

Call for Greater Unity Among Women

In his remarks, Amaechi encouraged women to work together more closely to strengthen their collective influence within politics.

He suggested that unity among women could significantly expand opportunities for female leadership in Nigeria’s governance structure.

Commentary and Analysis

Amaechi’s proposal reflects a broader global trend where governments and political movements are increasingly discussing gender balance in leadership.

Supporters argue that equal representation can lead to more inclusive policymaking and ensure that women’s perspectives are integrated into national decision-making.

However, political analysts note that achieving such a goal would require both legislative commitment and political consensus, especially within Nigeria’s complex party system.

If implemented, a cabinet evenly divided between men and women would represent one of the most significant gender representation milestones in Nigeria’s political history.
