George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2025 Anambra State election, has formally resigned his membership of the party.

The development was made public on Monday through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Johnson Okoye, titled “Moghalu Resigns Membership of Labour Party.”

According to the statement, Moghalu communicated his decision in a letter dated January 26, 2026, which he personally signed and submitted to the chairman of the Labour Party in his ward, Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State.

The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority did not give any specific reasons for his decision to exit the party.

In his resignation letter, Moghalu expressed gratitude to the Labour Party at the ward, state, and national levels for providing him the opportunity to contest the November 2025 off-cycle governorship election.

The letter, which took immediate effect, was written in a polite and appreciative tone, acknowledging the cooperation, support, and goodwill he received from party leaders and members throughout the campaign period.

Part of the letter read, “I extend warm regards from my family and write to formally notify you of my resignation from the Labour Party, effective January 26, 2026.

“I also sincerely thank the party, through you, for granting me the platform to contest the recent governorship election in our state.”

He added, “Kindly accept my heartfelt regards and convey the same to all party members.”

As of the time of filing this report, Moghalu has not disclosed his next political step or indicated whether he plans to join another political party.
